Food Bank for NYC
Last year, I joined the board of the Food Bank for New York City, an organization that has been working to end hunger here for 35 years by organizing food, information, and support for low-income New Yorkers.
I was surprised to learn that over 1 million women and girls in our city are living below the federal poverty level and not only rely on the Food Bank for food, but also for their feminine care products. Purchasing menstrual hygiene and household products compete with other basic needs (rent, food and utilities). When a family is on a very limited budget and faced with tough decisions on how to spend their money, many times purchasing these products are not an option and the women and girls have to do without.
The thought of a young girl missing school, right here in the greatest city in the world, because she can't afford tampons, or a woman taking all of the paper towels out of the dispenser at work to save for when she has her period, really struck me.
I decided to partner with Food Bank and launch a campaign called Woman to Woman to raise awareness for the month of March, Women’s History Month. Through this campaign, Food Bank For New York City will raise awareness and financial support to ensure the women and girls we support are served with dignity and have the ability to obtain these basic necessities.
